I was using the wrong controller layout for 10 years without knowing it

Last night I was playing Halo with my buddy and he kept crushing me. He asked what my controls were and I said default. He laughed and showed me his bumper jumper setup. I switched over and suddenly I was landing headshots way easier after just 3 rounds. Turns out I never questioned the default layout since 2014 when I first got an Xbox One. Now I feel dumb for all those lost games. Has anyone else had a similar moment where they just accepted something out of habit?

My buddy Kevin did this exact thing with golf, not tennis. He played for years gripping the club wrong, slicing every drive into the trees, and just figured he was bad at the game. One day a pro at a course stopped him, showed him the correct grip, and suddenly he was hitting straight shots like he'd been lying about his handicap.
