The cheap GPS unit that died halfway through a road trip last August

I was driving from Nashville to Memphis for a family reunion when my old Garmin nuvi just froze on the map screen. It was 95 degrees outside and the suction cup had fallen off the windshield three times already. I ended up using my phone's GPS for the last 2 hours, but the data signal kept dropping in rural areas. That thing served me well for 8 years, but I guess the heat finally cooked its insides. Has anyone else had a gadget just give up on them mid-trip like that?

Was it really that big a deal though since you had your phone as a backup?

Oh man, @skyler_white95, you're making me sound like I had some fancy backup plan! My phone was dying at 15% battery because I forgot to charge it the night before. I had to choose between using maps or calling for help, and I picked wrong because Google Maps ate up the last bit of juice. So no, having a phone with a dead battery is not really a backup. It's more like having a rock with a pretty screen.
