The night a guy at a Toledo diner got me hooked on reading the fine print
Back in 2011 I was at a diner in Toledo after a late shift and this older guy at the counter was arguing with three people about some local zoning thing. He kept pulling out a folded copy of the actual city document and pointing to page after page while they just repeated what they'd heard on the news. I sat there for 40 minutes and by the end they went quiet, not because he yelled but because he had the paper right there. Now whenever a wild claim floats around I go find the source doc first, which has saved me from repeating plenty of junk. So what's the one document or record you always check before you buy a story?
