Appreciation post: rented a mini excavator instead of a walk-behind trencher for a 90 foot run, and the difference was night and day
Last week I had to run 90 feet of gas line to a detached garage in Naperville, and I was set on a walk-behind trencher because that's what my old boss always used. The rental counter guy told me to try their 1.7 ton mini excavator for the same $280 daily rate, and I was skeptical. Turns out the mini cut the whole trench in about 2 hours versus the half day I planned for the trencher, and it handled the tree roots that would have stopped a walk-behind cold. The backfill with the bucket saved me another hour of shovel work, so I'm never going back to chasing a machine that walks faster than me. What do you all use for short residential utility runs, or am I late to this party?
