Rant: swore mini excavators were toys til one dug my 40ft trench in 3 hours
Last Saturday I was staring at 40 feet of clay in my backyard in Boise, dreading the shovel work and already pricing out a rental trencher. My neighbor rolled up his little 1.5 ton mini excavator and I laughed, honestly figured it would tip over in the first scoop. That thing chewed through the whole run in about 3 hours and even dug around the sprinkler lines without nicking one, which I would have bet $500 against. Now I feel dumb for renting a walk-behind trencher two summers ago for the same kind of job, cost me $180 and my whole weekend. Anyone run a thumb on a machine that small, or is it not worth the extra rental fee?
Tbh your neighbor got lucky, one rock or root and that little machine stops dead and you are back to hand work, plus a 1.5 ton can rip up turf and mess up grading in a way a trencher never would. Renting the walk behind for $180 was the smart call because it does one job clean and you don't have to fix ruts after. Only reason I'd say the mini wins is if you have a lot of digging ahead, not one trench.
