Showerthought: everyone says hang your herbs upside down, but my kitchen window jar beats my drying rack
I read a comment last week from someone in a cozy living group saying you have to bundle herbs and hang them in a dark closet or they turn to dust, and I just don't buy it as the only way. For 2 summers now I've been snipping basil and mint, sticking the stems in a jam jar with an inch of water on my south facing windowsill, and changing the water every 3 days. The mint lasted 11 days and the basil held on for 8, way longer than the bunch I hung in my pantry that went crispy in 5. Plus the jar looks nice next to my flour tin and I actually remember to use it instead of walking past a dusty bundle. I think the dark closet thing works for big harvests you plan to store, but for a couple stems you'll eat this week the jar wins. Does anyone else keep theirs in water, or am I the only one skipping the twine?
