Stopped buying those scented wax melts for the mudroom and switched to a simmer pot on the woodstove
I need to flag something before anyone else spends money on this like I did. For about two years I was buying those little scented wax cubes, roughly $14 every few weeks at the grocery store here in Springfield, and my mudroom still smelled like wet boots and dog by Sunday. Then my mom mentioned she used to just keep a small pot on the back of the stove with orange peels, a cinnamon stick, and a bay leaf, so I tried it for one week. The difference was real: the smell actually reached the hallway and the coat hooks instead of sitting in one corner, and the whole thing cost me maybe 60 cents because it was all stuff headed for the compost. The wax melts only throw scent while they're hot, but the simmer pot keeps going as long as the stove has a little heat, which around here is most of the evening. One thing to watch is not letting the water cook off, so I keep a mason jar of water right next to it and top it up when I walk by. Has anyone tried this with rosemary or apple peels, and does the smell stick around longer with either one?
I always figured the wax melts were the easy route and the stove pot was just something people did to feel thrifty. Turns out I had it backwards too. Apple peels and a cinnamon stick lasted through the whole evening for me, and the house smelled like it all the way to the stairs, not just the one room. Rosemary goes strong for the first hour but then fades, so I'd stick with the peels if you want it to hang around.
