Tried store-bought compost and then made my own. No comparison.
I used to buy the bagged stuff from the garden center for my flower beds. Spent like $8 a bag and it always felt dry and lifeless. Then my neighbor showed me her pile last spring. She just layers kitchen scraps, fallen leaves, and grass clippings. Let it sit for about 4 months and turn it once a week. The soil that came out was dark, crumbly, and smelled like fresh earth. Now I have my own bin behind the shed and I won't go back. Has anyone else tried making their own and noticed a big difference in plant health?

And now you can't beat that smell for anything bagged.

Honestly, I gotta disagree a bit. I tried making my own compost for two years and it never came out right. Bagged stuff from the store might cost more but at least I know it's consistent and won't have random weed seeds in it.
