Tried the hay bale garden trick and now I can't figure out if it's clever or just weird
Last spring I set up three straw bales in my backyard, soaked them for two weeks like the old books say, and planted tomatoes right into the tops. The plants came up fine, but by July the bales had turned into a soggy mess that smelled like a wet barn and drew every slug within a mile. One side of me says it's a cheap way to skip building raised beds, since the bales cost me $18 total at a farm outside town. The other side says I spent way more time watering than my neighbor did with his plain dirt plot. My tomatoes ended up okay but not better than his, and now I'm stuck with three rotting bales to haul off. Is this one of those old tricks that only works in dry places, or did I just do it wrong?
