Update: I called canning 'grandma cosplay' for 2 years and then I ate my words
Two summers back my neighbor Deb in Boise handed me a jar of her bread and butter pickles and I smiled and put it in the back of the fridge, because I figured boiling jars was just something people do for the photos. Last August my cucumber patch went crazy and I had 14 pounds sitting on the counter, so I finally borrowed her water bath canner and did 9 jars in one afternoon. Total cost was about $6 for lids and vinegar, and those pickles tasted better in January than anything off the shelf. The part that got me was hearing the lids pop one by one on the counter, it felt like winning something. So what is everyone canning right now, and does anyone have a good recipe for green beans that does not go mushy?
