After 4 failed attempts, my kids finally beat me at Mario Kart tonight

I used to swear by the classic rule that my wife and I always got first and second place, no matter what. But last night my 9 year old hit me with a blue shell right at the finish line on Rainbow Road and my 11 year old snuck past on the last curve. First they started trash talking, then they demanded a rematch, and after four races straight I realized they actually learned the item timing and shortcut paths. I was so used to holding back that I forgot they've been grinding this game for two months. Has anyone else hit that moment where the kids suddenly got too good, and how did you handle the new competitive balance?
