Bought velcro cable ties 3 times before realizing I was wrapping them too tight

I kept snapping the little tips off those velcro wraps until I saw my buddy leave his loose enough to slide a finger through. Has anyone else been choking their cables like that without noticing?

Wait, are you supposed to leave them loose? I've been cranking mine down tight thinking that was the whole point.
