Forty-two cable ties later, I finally counted my collection

I spent last weekend pulling everything out of my closet to reorganize, and when I lined up all my games, controllers, and consoles, I hit 42 separate items that need some kind of cable or power cord. That number surprised me because I thought I was a pretty minimal collector, just a few old systems and a couple of modern ones. But between the Wii, the PS2, the Switch dock, and all the handhelds, the tangle was way worse than I realized. I ended up labeling every single cable with a small tag and wrapping them in velcro loops, which took about three hours total. The funny thing is, once I saw that number written down, I finally understood why my closet felt so cramped even though the shelf space looked empty. Has anyone else done a full inventory count like that and been shocked at their total? If so, how do you decide what to keep versus what to store elsewhere?

Actually, your count might be off in a way that makes total sense... I did this same thing last year and hit 47, but then I realized I was counting the USB cables and controller chargers that came with things I'd already sold. Like, I kept all those old Nokia and Mini USB cables thinking I'd need them someday, and they were inflating my number without actually belonging to anything I still owned. So before you panic about the 42, go back and check if every single cable actually has a home right now. If not, those don't really count toward your collection, they're just clutter with a nostalgic attachment. For the ones that do have homes, I ended up boxing up anything from consoles I haven't turned on in over two years and labeled the box with the date. That way the cables stay with their systems instead of getting mixed up in the active pile.
