Zipties felt like permanent cable jail, until I moved my retro setup last month
I used to velcro strap everything because I was scared of cutting a cable by mistake, but after 3 years of straps slipping loose behind my shelf I switched to zipties with the little release tab. Now my 12 console cables stay put and I can still undo one in about 5 seconds when I swap the N64 out. Anyone else use the releasable kind or do you just cut and redo them?
Releasable zipties are still zipties, and that little tab is the weak point. I've had two of them snap off after a year behind my tv stand, and once that tab is gone you're back to cut and redo anyway. Velcro slipping is usually just cheap velcro or wrapping it wrong, the good stuff with the plastic buckle holds fine. With 12 cables packed tight, one ziptie pulled too snug can pinch the jacket and you won't see the damage until a console starts acting weird. Straps let you leave a little breathing room and adjust without touching anything else. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather rewrap a strap than trust a tiny plastic tab to hold up over time.
