Just realized my old chain sling trick was wrong after a near miss on a 14 ton pick
Last Tuesday I was setting a 14 ton AC unit on a roof in Fort Worth and my chain sling slipped about six inches off the hook. Nobody got hurt but it scared the daylights out of me. For 9 years I swore by wrapping the chain twice around the hook shank to keep it centered, and a retired operator named Gus saw it and asked why I was doing that. He said the wraps actually force the link to load sideways and can crack it over time, which I never knew. He showed me his single choke point and the load chart and I felt like a rookie. Went home and looked at my own chain and sure enough there was a hairline crack starting. So now I am rethinking 9 years of habit, what other little short cuts did you pick up that turned out to be bad news?
