Pro tip: hit 10,000 hours on the same Grove last Tuesday and it dawned on me I've been babying a machine older than my kid
I was filling out the hour meter log at the end of a shift in Baton Rouge last Tuesday and the number rolled over to 10,000 exactly while I was standing there. This is a 2006 Grove RT530E, older than my daughter, and I've run it off and on since I got my card. What got me was the log book had a note from the guy who ran it back in 2011 saying the boom pins were getting sloppy. Same pins. Same slop. I've greased this thing more times than I can count and it still swings a little lazy to the right on a hot day. The office keeps saying it's due for a rebuild but that 10K on the clock was like a little reminder that this machine has outlasted three supers and two layoffs. Anybody else got a rig they've logged serious hours on and secretly trust more than the newer units?
My buddy runs a 1998 Link-Belt and swears the new units don't have the same feel, says the old girl talks to him through the levers. He babies the hell out of it too, same lazy swing on hot days and all. There's something to a machine you know every squeak of, you just don't get that with a fresh one.
