Watched a tower crane swing around downtown Boston yesterday morning

The way the operator rode the wind gusts instead of fighting them made me think about how I approach those sketchy extension ladder setups on big houses. Any other operators notice crane control principles showing up in your regular life?

Ever notice how ladder work feels exactly like that when you stop white-knuckling and just sway with your own momentum? Helps me on those gusty days messing with gutters on a three-story.

See, I've got to push back on that. White-knuckling is what keeps most of us alive on a ladder - that tension is your body's way of saying you're one gust of wind from a bad fall. I've been on ladders long enough to know that relaxing into the sway is a good way to get launched off the side when a real hard gust hits.
