A writing prompt from a random diner napkin broke my block
Last Tuesday I was stuck on a story for like 3 hours, nothing was landing. I went to this diner on Main Street, ordered coffee, and started doodling on a napkin out of pure frustration. The waitress saw me and said, "You look like you're trying to catch smoke with your bare hands." She grabbed a pen and wrote a weird prompt on my napkin: "Write about the last thing you lied about, but from the object's point of view." That one line completely flipped my brain. I wrote 800 words on a half-cold pancake's perspective that night and it was the most fun I've had writing in months. Now I keep a stack of napkins in my glovebox for when I'm stuck, and I ask friends for random prompts when I'm out of ideas. Has anyone else had a random stranger or a weird setting give them a better prompt than any book or website?
