Hot take: stealing a rule from my kid's bedtime routine got me writing prompts again after 8 months of blank pages
I had the worst dry spell of my life with prompts, like eight months of opening a notebook, staring at it, and shutting it again before the coffee even got cold. Then my daughter started fighting bedtime and we tried that trick where you ask a kid three silly questions before lights out, and something clicked for me. Now I pull my prompt from whatever she answers. Last Tuesday she said her shoe was a spaceship captain who got fired, and I wrote 600 words about a shoe that got laid off from NASA. It sounds dumb but the pressure is gone because the prompt is already weird and I am not trying to be smart about it. I keep a little notebook on my nightstand with just her lines in it, nothing else. My question is does anyone else borrow from kids or eavesdropped conversations, or am I the only one stealing material from a six year old?
