My writing group leader in Denver said my prompts were too safe, and I'm still mad about it
I brought 10 prompt ideas to my writing group meetup at a coffee shop in Denver back in April, feeling pretty good about them. My group leader, Dana, read through all of them and handed the sheet back without a word, then pointed at the first one and said 'nobody would write anything real from this.' I pushed back but she made me sit there and rewrite prompt number 1 three different times in front of everyone. Her point was that a prompt should dig into something messy, not just be a fun idea. What's your test for whether a prompt will actually get people to write something honest instead of a safe little scene?
