I tried using a password manager for the first time and it locked me out of my own email for 4 hours.

Sounds like you might have skipped setting up a recovery option. Most password managers let you add a backup email or phone number. You should always do that first thing. I set mine to text my old phone number. Saved me last month when I forgot my main password.

Oh, setting it to text your old phone number is a bold move. I admire the confidence of using a number you probably don't even have the sim card for anymore. That's like hiding a spare key in the woods and hoping a squirrel doesn't move it. My luck, I'd change carriers and lose that number, then be totally locked out. It's a good tip, but it feels like trusting a very specific and fragile piece of luck.
