Got heckled at a birthday party, now I time my punchlines with a stopwatch
My daughter's 8th birthday party last Saturday. I dropped my classic 'What do you call a fish with no eyes?' joke and the pause between the setup and the punchline was too long. One of the kids yelled 'finish it, old man!' and everyone laughed at me instead of the joke. Started using my phone's stopwatch after that. I aim for 2 seconds between setup and punch. Too fast feels rushed, too slow loses the room. Has anyone else found a sweet spot for their joke timing? Or do you just wing it?

Man, the stopwatch thing is funny but you're missing the real problem. Kids that age don't heckle because of timing, they heckle because they smell fear. That pause felt long to you because you got nervous, and an 8 year old can pick up on that faster than any adult. The fix isn't the stopwatch, it's committing to the pause even if it stretches out, because a confident 4 second silence beats a shaky 2 second one every time. Also, a fish with no eyes joke is like 40 years old, that crowd has probably heard it from their own parents, so no stopwatch on earth was saving that one.
