I keep getting booed for my 'cucumber' joke and I think it's great
I tried my new one-liner at the family barbecue last Saturday. It goes: 'I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes... she gave me a hug in the backyard.' People groan but I get a few chuckles. Has anyone else had a joke land totally different than you expected at a gathering?

Yeah but honestly I think you're misreading the room. That "embrace your mistakes" joke has been floating around for years and it's pretty worn out. People groan because they've heard the setup before and they're tired of it. Your wife giving you a hug in the backyard doesn't fix the fact that the punchline is predictable. A good joke should surprise people not make them sigh. Maybe try something that actually lands with the crowd instead of doubling down on stuff that's already stale. Why not test new material on strangers first before bringing it to family?

For me, I just started roasting my dad about his bad jokes and suddenly everyone relaxed.
