My 7 year old told me my "broken pencil" joke was pointless, and now I can't stop rewriting it
So last Tuesday my 7 year old daughter hit me with that line after I told her my broken pencil joke at dinner, and she just stared at me and flipped it back on me. I laughed way harder than she did, but later I realized the reason it works is because the pun IS the point, so calling it pointless makes the pun true in two ways at once. Now I've been messing with a version where the pencil says "I guess I'm done" instead, and I can't tell if that's better or if I'm just overthinking a joke a kid already roasted. Has anyone else had their own kid or partner accidentally improve one of your puns while making fun of it?
Honestly it sounds like you're WAY overthinking a joke your kid already roasted in one sentence. The "I'm done" version isn't bad, but the original lands because "pointless" does double duty, and that's not something you can really top by reworking it. Part of what made it funny was her delivery, not the joke itself. Sometimes the best move is to let the kid win and move on to the next bad pun.
