Vent: the menu board at a diner in Barstow had 6 typos and I couldn't stop rewriting them in my head
Stopped at this little diner off I-15 in Barstow on a drive back from Vegas and while I was waiting on a patty melt I just stared at their chalkboard menu. It said "breakfest served all day" and "sandwhich" and "coffe" and like three other spelling flubs, and my brain kept auto-correcting every one of them. Here's the thing though, I started thinking about how puns fall apart when the spelling is off. "Eggs-quisite" only works if you spell it right, you know? I actually grabbed a napkin and started drafting a fix for their board, but every version I tried lost the joke once I cleaned up the letters. My girlfriend told me to quit being a weirdo and eat my fries. So now I'm wondering, when you write a pun on purpose, do you keep the wonky spelling because it's part of the bit, or do you fix it and trust people to hear the wordplay anyway? Would love to hear how you all handle that.
