I used to keep him moving because I figured a walk is for covering ground and burning energy. She said letting him stop and smell everything calms him down more than distance does, and she was right, he naps hard after and pulls way less. Now I'm wondering, how long are your walks and do you let your dog set the pace or do you?
The sniffing is basically their version of reading the news, so cutting it short is like handing someone a paper and yanking it away after two seconds. My vet told me 20 minutes of nose work tires a dog out about the same as an hour of fast walking, and that matched what I saw with my own dog. Now we do one long sniff walk a day where he runs the show, then a quicker one later just for steps. The pace thing matters less than giving them that one walk where they get to be in charge.
