My vet in Boise said to walk my dog at 5am and I thought she was nuts
Last Tuesday my vet said straight up: "Your dog is miserable on your 2pm walks because the pavement is 138 degrees." I told her that was crazy since we only go 20 minutes around the neighborhood. Then she pulled up the heat map on her phone and showed me asphalt temps by hour, and the 5am slot was 40 degrees cooler. So now we're out there at 5am with a headlamp like a couple of weirdos, and my lab is actually pulling me down the block again instead of dragging. Anyone else switch their whole walk schedule around because of summer heat?
There was a study out of some Arizona university that measured pavement temps and found they stay above 120 degrees even two hours after sunset. So the whole "just wait until evening" advice is garbage in places like Phoenix or Boise in July. I heard a vet on a podcast say dogs lose heat mainly through their paws, so hot ground is worse for them than hot air. My neighbor started doing the 5am thing too and swears her beagle is a different animal now. Meanwhile I'm still dragging mine out at 6 and getting side eye from the early crowd.
