Night walks with a reflective vest backfired in the worst way

I started wearing a bright orange reflective vest on our 10pm route through Riverside Park so drivers would see us, but last Tuesday a guy in a truck actually rolled down his window and yelled at me for impersonating a crossing guard. Turns out the vest made a passing patrol officer pull over and ask if I was directing traffic, and now my dog thinks every car horn means we should sit. Has anyone else had a visibility gear choice attract more attention than you wanted?

Oh man the crossing guard thing is too real. I got one of those cheap mesh vests from the hardware store for walking my beagle around the block after dark and a lady in a minivan actually stopped and waited for me to wave her through the intersection. I just stood there like an idiot holding a leash while she honked and my dog started spinning in circles. Now I wear a little clip on light on my jacket instead, way less official looking.
