The dog park gate taught me to always carry a spare leash
After my pup bolted through the broken latch at Riverside Park last Tuesday and I spent 20 minutes chasing him with a shoelace tied to his collar, I now check every gate before I let him off and keep a backup leash in my jacket at all times, has anyone else had a close call like that?

Wow, I have to say I see it the other way. A broken gate is a fluke, and swapping out your whole routine for one bad latch feels like a lot. I have been going to dog parks for years and the real fix is training recall, not packing extra gear. If your dog comes when called, a busted latch is a ten second problem, not a 20 minute chase. A spare leash is fine to have, but it does not teach the dog anything, it just saves you once. I would put that energy into recall practice instead, and then you can relax at any park.
