My friend talked me into a smart plug for my dumb lamp, now I get it
I always thought smart plugs were a solution looking for a problem. Then my buddy Mike in Portland showed me his routine last Friday. He set his coffee maker to start at 6:30 AM and the lamp to fade in at 7:00, all through a $12 plug from the hardware store. The kicker was when he said 'it's not about the remote control, it's about forgetting the switch exists.' That hit different because I realized I was thinking of it as a replacement for a timer, not a whole setup change. Now I have one on my space heater and one on my phone charger to cut standby power, and my electric bill dropped about 8% in two weeks. Has anyone else had a gadget click for them after someone framed it differently?

Wait, has anyone thought about using these for people with pets or kids who mess with switches? I put one on my hallway light so my toddler can't flip it off and sit in the dark, and I leave the physical switch taped down. Also works for my cat who somehow figured out how to bump the lamp switch at 3 AM. That's a whole other reason to want the app control, it's about keeping things the way you set them, not just convenience. My neighbor uses hers to lock her teenager's gaming setup after bedtime, she just kills the plug from her phone. Kind of sneaky but honestly smart.
