PSA: my photo backup was a joke until 3 weeks ago

Tbh I kept dragging photos to an external drive and thought that was enough, until my laptop died at a coffee shop in Portland and I lost 4 years of pics. Now I use a free cloud sync that runs every night, but has anyone else been burned by thinking local copies counted as backup?
