TIL my smart speaker's mute button was secretly recording for a month
I hit the mute button on my Echo Dot every night around 11pm, thinking it was fully off. Last week I checked the app and saw it had logged 31 nights of 'ambient audio' even while muted. Turns out the mute only kills the mic for voice commands, but the device still listens for 'wake word' in the background if you don't unplug it. I was torn between calling it a hidden feature or a privacy flaw. Does your smart speaker actually stay silent when muted, or have you found a weird workaround like unplugging it on a timer?

Amazon probably thinks I'm secretly narrating my life to it, 31 nights of me mumbling "gotta remember to buy milk" at 2am is a podcast nobody asked for. Honestly I just started covering mine with a sock, feels stupid but at least i control the chaos.
