Concert earplugs vs nothing, which side are you on?

Caught a show at a small club in Nashville last month. Forgot my earplugs at home. Left with that ringing for 2 days straight. Now I always carry a pair, but my buddy swears plugs kill the high end and make the mix muddy. Is protecting your hearing worth losing some detail? Or is he just ignoring the damage? Curious if anyone else has strong feelings on this.

Those 2 days of ringing stopped being worth it once I realized the highs come back but the crowd noise drowns out the mix anyway.
