Found out my ears prefer 70 dB over 85 dB after a loud concert
I was messing with my Sony WH-1000XM4s and measured the volume with an app called Sound Meter. Turns out I'd been listening at 85 dB for years, but after one loud show at the Massey Hall in Toronto, my ears felt shot. Dropped it to 70 dB and suddenly I hear details in tracks I've played 100 times. Anyone else try measuring their listening level and get surprised by the number?
The drop from 85 to 70 is a game changer, honestly. I did the same thing after a festival awhile back, and my ears felt like they were wrapped in cotton for two days. Once I turned it down, I started noticing little guitar squeaks and breaths that I never caught before. That said, keep an eye on the 70 number because phone mics and apps can read a bit low, so your real level might be a touch higher. If you can, give your ears a full 48 hours of quiet after a loud show, it makes a huge difference for how sensitive you are to volume afterward. And yeah, the XM4s are great, but even they can't undo years of blasting, so you're on the right track.
