Why does nobody talk about open-back headphones on a noisy bus?

Last month I tried wearing my open-back pair during a 40 minute commute through downtown Seattle and heard every engine rev and chatter over the music. It completely changed how I judge soundstage now, because isolation matters way more than detail in real daily use. Has anyone else ditched open-backs after a loud transit test, or am I missing something?
