My buddy in our D&D group changed my mind about playing evil characters

For years I always said I'd never play an evil character in a campaign, but my friend Dave proved me wrong. We were at a game shop in Austin about 6 months ago, and he was running a one-shot where his rogue actually betrayed the party to save a village of orphans. He explained that evil doesn't have to mean chaotic stupid, and showed me how his character's selfish motivation still helped everyone in the end. Has anyone else had a moment where a single player totally flipped your view on a character type?

Saving orphans sounds more like good than evil, honestly.
