Was just talking to a guy in a coworking space in Lisbon who said he’s been a nomad for 12 years without ever buying travel insurance
He told me he just banks the cash instead and pays for anything out of pocket, has anyone else tried going without insurance and how did that work out for you?

Yeah but there's a hidden cost nobody talks about with that approach. If you're in a serious accident in say Thailand or Vietnam and need an airlift to a decent hospital, that's easily 50k plus just for the chopper. Most people don't have that kind of cash just sitting in a savings account they're willing to burn through in one go. Even if you've got the money, the stress of negotiating massive medical bills in a foreign language while you're injured and vulnerable is something you can't really prepare for. Has anyone ever actually seen the price list for a simple broken leg in a private hospital in Southeast Asia without insurance? It'll make your eyes water.

Hidden cost nobody talks about" is right, wonder how many people actually budget for that chopper.
