My neighbor swore by using cheap landscape fabric under mulch for years, and after I ignored him and pulled up a giant mess of weeds last weekend, I finally get why he was right.

He said to spend the $30 on the thick woven stuff from the farm supply store, not the thin rolls at the big box store, but I thought I knew better and now I'm digging out rotted fabric and crabgrass roots three summers later, anyone else learn this the hard way?

Was the fabric fully rotted or just torn up in spots?

Oh man, "fully rotted" made me think of a buddy who found an old Civil War flag in his grandma's attic. It looked okay on the surface but when he tried to fold it, the whole center just crumbled into dust, like someone had left it in a wet basement for a hundred years. There were a few spots where the fabric was still intact around the edges, but the rest was basically just a outline of where the material used to be.
