Watch out for hidden tree roots when digging fence post holes
Last weekend I was digging post holes for a new raised garden bed in my backyard in Austin. I hit a thick root about 8 inches down that I didn't see. That root snapped my shovel handle clean in half after just 3 swings. Now I always do a quick root sweep with a metal probe before I dig anywhere. Has anyone else had a tool ruined by a sneaky root?

My buddy was digging a hole for a mailbox and hit a root so hard it bent his brand new post hole digger. Had to borrow mine to finish the job. Now he always soaks the ground first before he even tries.
