Spent 3 hours trying to adjust my rear derailleur before realizing the cable was frayed inside the shifter

Ngl, I kept tweaking the limit screws and barrel adjuster for what felt like forever, but the real problem was hidden where I never thought to look has anyone else had a hidden cable issue wreck your whole afternoon?

Man "hidden cable issue wreck your whole afternoon" - bro that's basically my entire bike maintenance life right there. I swear cables have this supernatural ability to hide their problems until you've already taken apart half the drivetrain for no reason. Had a brake cable snap inside my road shifter once and I literally checked everything else first because who expects the cable to be the problem when it looks fine from the outside. Took me two hours and a lot of swear words before I finally pulled the housing out and saw that little frayed end staring back at me like a jerk.

And then that frayed end had the audacity to just sit there like it had been hiding the whole time on purpose. @price.tyler pretty sure my bike has a secret bet going with my tools to see how many times they can make me question my life choices. Isn't the whole point of cables that they're supposed to be the simple part?
