Hot glue vs epoxy for a pencil holder - don't make my mistake

I spent last weekend making a cool pencil holder from wooden craft sticks for my desk. Used hot glue because it was faster and easier. After two days with some heavier pens, the whole thing just collapsed on my keyboard. Rebuilt it with standard two-part epoxy and let it cure for 12 hours. That thing is rock solid now and hasn't budged. Has anyone else found hot glue fails for holding weight on desk stuff?

Stick with the epoxy. I learned this lesson making a knife block out of bamboo skewers and popsicle sticks last year. The hot glue joints just couldn't handle the weight of the knives after a few days, and the whole thing sagged and dumped my chef's knife on the counter. Rebuilt it with slow-cure epoxy and let it sit for a full 24 hours, and it's been holding ten knives with no flex at all. The hot glue is fine for little light stuff like holding a phone or some office supplies, but anything with actual weight just works the glue loose over time.
