Couldn't decide between a $30 power strip or a $120 surge protector for under my desk

I was building out my new standing desk setup last month and got stuck on this choice. The cheap one had more outlets but no insurance (you know, that coverage for fried gear). I ended up going with the $120 one after my roommate told me about his old PC dying from a lightning spike. Has anyone else just used a basic power strip for years without issue?

Threw away my money on a $120 surge protector years ago and honestly wish I'd just bought a $30 power strip instead. Most of those "insurance" promises are just marketing fluff, they'll fight you tooth and nail if you actually try to claim anything. Lightning spikes are super rare unless you live in a weird area, and regular power strips handle the everyday voltage stuff just fine. Save your cash for something that actually matters, like a good UPS if you're really that worried.

Yeah I had a similar experience with one of those expensive surge protectors, ended up frying during a brownout and their warranty process was a nightmare. I switched to just using a good quality power strip and invested the difference in a basic UPS for my computer setup. The peace of mind from the battery backup honestly feels more useful than any "connected equipment guarantee" ever did.
