The stitching gap in braided fleece toys

I keep seeing people post those braided fleece toys where the knots are an inch apart. My dog had the end of one swallowed in under 3 minutes because there was too much loose fleece between the knots. I tie mine at half inch intervals and they last at least 2 weeks before the first rip happens.

Switched to tightly spaced knots years ago for the same reason and never looked back. Those store-bought toys with big gaps are just asking for trouble with an eager chewer. My tip is to tie every half inch and cut the tails real short so there's nothing loose to grab onto.

My lab went through one of those tightly knotted rope toys in about 20 minutes flat a couple years back. He just gnawed right through the knots and then had a mouthful of frayed rope strands anyway. Honestly, I think people overstate how dangerous the gaps are. My dog has chewed up plenty of store toys with wide spacing and he's been fine, just spit the bits out. Cutting the tails real short makes sense if your dog is a shredder but most dogs aren't trying to eat the whole thing. It's a toy, not a ticking time bomb.
