Rant: Putting together a closet organizer with my mom took all Saturday

Honestly, she kept changing her mind on where each basket should go. Tbh, it felt like we were rearranging my old room all over again. Ngl, I see a lot of folks struggling with family when doing home fixes. We finally got it sorted by taking a break and talking it out. Now the closet works, but man, it was a journey.

Hold up, I gotta say that just taking a break and talking might not fix the root problem. From my experience, the big issue is usually not having a clear plan before you start. Like, if you both agree on where stuff goes first, you save so much time. My mom and I used to clash over stuff like that until we started sketching it out on paper. Now we hardly argue because we both know the game plan. It's less about fixing fights and more about avoiding them in the first place.

Yeah, that part about sketching it out first really hits home. I heard a home improvement podcaster say the biggest DIY fights start because people are literally not on the same page. Like, if you just grab a marker and label the shelves "mom's sweaters" and "my jeans" on a quick drawing before you touch a single bracket, it stops the back-and-forth. @jessek16 is right, it turns a whole day of debate into a ten-minute chat. Saved my sanity last year when my dad and I redid the garage storage. We just taped out sections on the floor with painter's tape first and argued over the tape, not the heavy shelves.

Totally get what anna_hill said about sketching it out first. My friend Mark told me a similar story about putting up a shed with his dad. They started building and immediately started fighting over where the tools would hang and where to put the lawnmower. It was a whole mess. They finally stopped, drew a super simple layout on a napkin, and labeled everything. After that, they finished in like two hours with no more yelling. It really is all about that first plan.
