Unpopular opinion: Testing paint colors on a small patch isn't enough
I painted my living room based on a small swatch, and the whole room looks much darker than I expected. How do you all decide on paint colors without surprises?

Always paint a big test area, at least a 3x3 foot square, on a couple of walls. Light changes everything, and a tiny swatch just can't show that. Look at your test spot at different times of day, with lamps on and off. It's a pain but it beats the surprise of a whole room going wrong.

Wait, I gotta disagree here. Painting massive test patches is overkill and a waste of paint. Those little swatches exist for a reason, they give you a solid feel for the color. Light changes matter, but not enough to justify all that extra work and time. You end up overthinking it and never happy with any choice. Just go with your gut and paint the room, it'll look fine.

Nah, the big patch is the only way. That tiny swatch looks totally different when it's blown up on a wall. I picked a gray once that looked perfect on the card, but on a whole wall it turned straight-up lavender in the afternoon light. Had to redo the whole thing. A big square shows you the real color, shadows and all. It's not overthinking, it's just being smart.
