Tried outlining characters on scrap paper before inking and my linework finally stopped looking like garbage.

I’ve been messing up drawings for weeks because I jump straight to the good paper, but after 3 practice sketches on junk mail my lines got steady. Has this trick helped anyone else nail their final drafts?

Oh man, junk mail is the best for practice sketches! I use the backs of old bills and sometimes my grocery lists (they double as a shopping distraction, you know?).

The envelope flaps are the best part honestly. They're already the perfect size for quick little warm up drawings and you don't feel bad messing them up. Sometimes I'll do a whole series of tiny hands or eyes on one envelope before tossing it. Plus the paper has a nice tooth to it that catches pencil marks really well.
