I always thought a 4-inch knife was fine for cutting drywall until I saw a guy in Kansas City use a 6-inch one last month.

Ever wonder if the drywall itself changed? Like maybe older houses had thicker board or something... a 4-inch blade might have been fine back in the day but now you need the extra reach. Could be why that guy had the bigger knife.

My uncle's 1970s house has half-inch drywall, but newer builds often use 5/8-inch for fire walls. You're right, @haydenwright, that extra eighth can make a 6-inch knife way better for taping.

Remember my buddy who tried using a 4-inch knife on a new build and totally botched the tape job?
