Pro tip: aligning monitor brightness levels with a phone camera
I spent weeks thinking my right monitor was just defective because colors looked totally off between the two screens. Then I used my phone camera in black and white mode to compare brightness levels side by side. Did this trick help anyone else nail down their settings without spending money on a calibration tool?

A buddy of mine spent nearly two months thinking his gaming monitor was busted. He kept adjusting the settings and nothing seemed to fix the weird yellow tint on one screen. Finally his wife took a picture of both monitors with her phone in black and white mode and there it was, clear as day. One screen was way dimmer than the other and that was throwing all the colors off. He felt pretty silly after that but at least he didn't have to buy a whole new monitor.

Oh man, @masondixon, that hits way too close to home. I spent a good three weeks last year thinking my fancy new TV had some weird green tint in the corner. I was about to return it and everything. Then my wife walks over, squints at it, and says "Honey, that's just the reflection from the plant on the windowsill." I felt so dumb I could've crawled under the rug. But your friend's story is even better because the black and white camera trick is genius. I'm gonna have to remember that for next time my gadgets start acting up. At least he saved some money and didn't end up like me - I once bought a whole new set of speakers because I plugged the left one into the right jack.
