I finally talked to a firefighter about our elevator recall procedures
I ran into a fire captain at a job in Cincinnati last week, and he said something that stuck with me. He told me they often find the recall key switch turned off in the machine room during inspections, which defeats the whole purpose of Phase I recall. He said, 'If we can't get that car, we're sending guys up the stairs with a hundred pounds of gear.' I've been in the trade for eight years and honestly never thought about it from their side like that. It made me double-check my own work on a service call yesterday. How often do you guys actually test the full recall sequence during routine maintenance?

That's a scary thought for the guys on the ladder truck.

Yeah, no kidding. That's a whole lot of trust in some hydraulics and old steel. Not a job for the faint of heart.
