Hot take: My family's bland stew got a life-changing splash of soy sauce

I always dreaded stew night because our version was so tasteless. Trying soy sauce on a lark finally made it taste like home cooking should. What little switch has saved a family dish for you?

What about just using more salt and pepper? My mom never used enough.

Worcestershire sauce did that for our meatloaf. My mom would make it with just ketchup on top, and it always tasted kind of flat. A friend suggested adding a few big glugs right into the mix, and it was like a different meal. It gives that salty, savory depth that was missing all along. Sometimes you just need one bold flavor to wake up a whole recipe that's been asleep for years.

Everyone jumps to add sauces like soy or Worcestershire, but that's just a band-aid. Jason_stone12's meatloaf might taste better now, but did anyone try fixing the base recipe first? Real home cooking doesn't need fancy tricks to be good.
